To keep grass from migrating onto sidewalks and garden beds, you should use an edger. In addition, your lawn will look more manicured with properly cut edges.

The ideal slope for a lawn's edge is between 20 and 40 degrees, and a powered edger is used to create this slope by slicing a thin strip of grass away from the edge of the lawn. We suggest that you cut your grass after you've trimmed your edges to prevent "crushing" the edge.

There is no standard practice for how often a lawn should be edged. Instead, the response is conditional on a number of other things. While some people edge after each mowing, others wait until they've done it three times. As the grass grows more rapidly after being mowed, the edges will need to be trimmed shorter.
